EXPOSITION TEXT (hortatory exposition)

I. Definition
Narrative exposition is the insertion of background information within a story or narrative. This information can be about the setting, characters' backstories, prior plot events, historical context, etc. In literature, exposition appears in the form of expository writing embedded within the narrative.

II. Purpose
To persuade the readers or listener that something should or should not be the case.

III. Structure
# Thesis: This section will contain the issue or problem that will be raised, while in the analytical exposition this section will contain the position, opinion or attitude of the author.

# Argument: The section that contains the opinion or argument that the author begins to explain. Both hortatory exposition and analytical exposition have the same explanation in this section.

# Repetition: Repetition is the conclusion. Hortatory exposition will contain recommendations or suggestions from the author about the problem that is the theme of writing. As for the analytical exposition, this section will contain a restatement from the author.

IV. Language Feature:
- Using the simple present tense.
- Many use conjunctions such as because, therefore, therefore, because, etc.
- Contains arguments.
- Many use words that contain cause and effect (cause-effect).
- Using vocabulary that can evoke emotions in the reader, such as: Amused, concerned, innocent, unreasonable, etc.

V. Example
Watch Your Kid while Watching TV

Television becomes one of the most important devices, which takes place in almost houses. It can unite all members of the family as well as separate them. However, is it important to know what your kids are watching? The answer is, of course, absolutely "Yes" and that should be done by all parents. Television can expose things you have tried to protect the children from, especially violence, pornography, consumerism and so on.

Recently, a study demonstrates that spending too much time on watching TV during the day or at bedtime often causes bed-time disruption, stress, and short sleep duration.

Another research find that there is a significant relationship between the amount of time spent for watching television during adolescence and early adulthood, and the possibility of being aggressive.

Meanwhile, many studies have identified a relationship between kids who watch TV a lot and being inactive and overweight.
Considering some facts mentioning above, protect your children with the following tips:
• Limit television viewing to one-two hours each day
• Do not allow your children to have a TV set in their own bedrooms
• Review the rating of TV shows which your children watch
• Watch television with your children and discuss what is happening in the show
